Rare PMG-certified Hong Kong Banknotes Offered in January Sales

Posted on 04/01/2022

Hundreds of Asian banknotes graded by PMG are featured in upcoming Spink auctions.

Over 500 vintage banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) are featured in auctions presented by Spink on January 7-9, 2022. Bidding is underway for CCS73A: Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong; CCS73C: Banknotes, Bonds & Shares and Coins of China and Hong Kong; and CSS75: The South East Asian Collection Part III.

Out of a large selection of rare and vintage banknotes, an elusive Hong Kong, Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China 1912 500 Dollars graded PMG 15 Choice Fine stands in the forefront. In 1853, the bank was established in London to capitalize on trading between the British territories in the Southeast Asian region. This particular note is the only issued example in the PMG Population Report; according to Spink, fewer than five such notes exist. This rarity (CCS73C, lot 5508) has an estimate of HK$1.35 million to HK$2 million (about $173,100 to $256,500 USD).
