High-denomination Vintage US Banknotes Certified by PMG in Stack's Bowers Sale

Two high-denomination notes, including one pedigreed to a renowned poker player, are among over 200 vintage US banknotes certified by Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) being offered in an upcoming auction. Bidding is already underway for the Stack’s Bowers November Auction, with Session 8 - US Currency scheduled for November 17, 2023.

One of the rarest notes in this auction is a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note (Chicago) graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 20293), which has an estimate of $175,000 to $275,000. PMG has certified just 42 examples of the 1934 series $5,000 denomination from the Chicago Federal Reserve District, and only 124 $5,000 Small-Size Federal Reserve Notes in all.

Another rarity being offered is a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note (Philadelphia) graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine (lot 20294), also with an estimate of $175,000 to $275,000. Only three examples of this catalog number appear in the PMG Population Report, and it is among only 117 total $10,000 Small Size Federal Reserve Notes certified by PMG. The note is pedigreed to Johnny Chan, a professional poker player who has won 10 World Series of Poker bracelets, the earliest in 1985 and the most recent in 2005.
